Yoga Therapy

The popularity of Yoga Asana as a form of exercise has grown exponentially in the west over the past half-century. However, yoga and its sister science, Ayurveda, have been the standard for the healing of mind, body, and spirit throughout the regions of India and the Himalayas for 5000 plus years.

Many practitioners who come to the physical practices of yoga may do so initially due to a physical limitation or chronic injury. The physical healing which takes place through practice often spills over into other areas of life, or otherwise leaves the new practitioner “wanting more.”  Postural Yoga Therapy, or Medical Therapeutic Yoga, assist the yoga practitioner in finding their perfect internal balance through asana-the physical postures, pranayama-targeted breathing practices which reset both postural stabilizers as well as the nervous system, and lifestyle modifications leading to optimal health and wellness. The goals of therapeutic yoga are not dissimilar to those of a traditional physical therapy program. These could include:

  1. Increased overall physical and/or mental health
  2. Increased fitness
  3. Increased power/ability to seek new challenges
  4. Increased insight into the building of intelligence and/or awareness
  5. Improving the practice of a particular pose
  6. Preparation for meditation

There are no prerequisites for the practice of yoga, nor are there requirements to adhere to a particular belief system or religious practice. Physical therapist is also long-standing yoga practitioners, and are able to guide you through subtle practices to enhance your physical therapy treatment as well as making recommendations for best practice upon the completion of your treatment, whether that is to continue enjoying group classes at a yoga studio or starting/continuing a home yoga practice.
